Both combine the benefits of a small footprint with the increased efficiency and flexibility of a medium- to high-throughput instrument. 'The Biomek NX is a very easy to use liquid handler. The software is easy to learn and is very intuitive. Once you learn the software, it is very easy to make custom methods with its icon based software system. The troubleshooting methods is also very easy. The instrument is very robust. I use my instrument to culture 100s of plates per day. The instrument also experiences little downtime.'

'A slight learning curve to use the software and machine; however it is a great piece of equipment for high through put liquid dispensing and re-array. It allows scientists to save time and maintain sample integrity/purity/location. It has great customer service and comes with yearly maintenance checks.'

'It is easy to use and user friendly. It is reliable and accurate. The technical support is very good. The application modules are flexible and interchangeable for various plate formats and applications. We have a pintool installed and it can be washed and re-use which is very cost-effective. We also have several washing stations for washing disposal tips which works very well in various applications. The software is easy to use. It is very helpful and easy to create various applications. 'We have three Biomek NxPs, one MC and two Span-8. They are good quality handlers with good precision. Excellent software, user friendly but at the same time very versatile through scripting interface. Light curtain is excellent for pausing the system at the exact right time. Disposable tips are good quality at a reasonable price. Drawbacks: MC cannot change between formats (96well, 384well), although Span-8 can switch between fixed tips and disposables (or a mix). Price is at the higher end. Span-8 disposable tips have to be discarded. Service is excellent in our area. Very difficult to integrate the safety system of the NxP with the safety system of our integrated robots as there is no hardware interface to the NxP safety.'

'There is a very steep learning curve, but once you've accomplished that the instrument works well. It took us almost a year to produce our first library. One of the problems (not Beckman's) is that NEB continues to change their protocols and it is very difficult to reprogram volume changes (Beckman's problem) the way the software works. It's similar to using HTML code rather than being able to simply make changes in the software available to the end user. These types of changes have to be done by the Beckman field rep and they are reluctant to pass along that information. '

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences is a leader when it comes to providing solutions and support that cover the full spectrum of the NGS sample preparation workflow with reagents and automation. Throughput options allow you to choose the right solution for your laboratory.

For small to medium-sized laboratories, the Biomek 4000 Laboratory Automation Workstation offers an expanding portfolio of validated and demonstrated NGS sample preparation methods. The methods for PCR setup and AMPure XP cleanup provide researchers with a low cost solution for automating critical steps in the NGS sample preparation process that reduce errors and are proven to generate quality results. For Laboratories with higher throughput needs, automated solutions are available on the Biomek NX P and Biomek FX P Workstations.

There’s a growing library of methods for applications from gDNA library construction to RNA sequencing and capture protocols. Built on flexible Biomek Software, the methods address the most tedious NGS workflow steps including nucleic extraction, library construction, size selection, PCR/qPCR setup, AMPure XP PCR cleanup, normalization and pooling. Beckman Coulter’s library of NGS methods include intuitive Graphical User Interfaces that enable quick implementation so new users can set up and run automated NGS sample preparation with minimal training. The methods are also written to maximize walk-away time, freeing time to work on other tasks. The built-in flexibility of Biomek hardware and software enables users to easily modify existing methods or create new ones on their own or with help from Beckman’s Field Application support team.
