Based on the Koihime Musou visual novel, Koihime Enbu features a reimagining of the Romance of Three Kingdoms where the majority of characters are girls. Originally an arcade fighting game, Koihime Enbu draws upon this pedigree to offer players accessible and exciting mechanics that will draw in beginner and veteran players alike. Koihime Musou. Named Kan’u, the well-endowed warrior travels the land with her new friend Chouhi and a varied cast of companions, from the kind Koumei to the egotistical Sonshoukou and beyond. Together, the gang takes odd jobs, engage in political struggles and find plenty of new adventures along the way! Koihime is one of the few visual novels that actually includes gameplay. However, I am hard pressed to say that it’s great. Ultimately, the gameplay is incredibly easy as long as you understand it.

Koihime Musou the anime was based off of Koihime Musou the game. Just as I would assume that the Shin Koihime Musou anime is based off the Shin Koihime Musou game which was a remake of the original. On top of that I believe the anime (never actually watched it so I'm going by word of mouth) didn't really get into the game's story. Koihime is one of the few visual novels that actually includes gameplay. However, I am hard pressed to say that it’s great. Ultimately, the gameplay is incredibly easy as long as you understand it. Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRai is a 2D fighting game in which we take control over characters from the anime series Koihime Musou (a loose adaptation of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Lou Guanzhong). This is an updated version of Koihime Enbu from 2016. The game is developed by Degica Games (Skyborn, Deadly Sin) and Unknown Games (Gear Boy).

Plot

The world of Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRai is loosely based on the fall of the Han dynasty in China (169 AD). The characters from the game are inspired by real, historical figures and the heroes of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. However, there is one big difference – all of them are beautiful women.

Mechanics

Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRai is a classic, 2D fighting title. Gameplay starts with picking one of a dozen characters (each featuring unique equipment and attacks) and a strategist (each choice offers access to additional abilities). Then, we find ourselves on an arena where we fight a heroine controlled by either the AI or another player. Combat is presented from a side-view. While controlling the character, we can launch attacks which can be further linked into combos. Additionally, during combat, we can make use of special attacks unlocked after filling a special bar.

Game modes

Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRaican be played solo or with other players via the Internet or locally, in split-screen. There is also a training mode.

Technical aspects

Koihime Enbu RyoRaiRai utilises nice, 2D visuals. The hand-drawn characters and locations may attract attention, as long as you do not mind the manga style characteristic for Asian productions.
